Acronyms

GIA - Grant-in-Aid
We are working on an easy to understand definition for this acronym.
CCL - Continuing Education
This division of the college offers fast-tracked programs and short courses. Tuition differs from our regular program offerings and is program/course dependant.

Delivery Styles

C
On Campus Delivery
All courses in this program will be delivered onsite at a CNA campus or at an approved location. Some courses may have online elements.
B
Blended Delivery
Some courses, or parts of courses, in this program will be delivered onsite at a CNA campus or at an approved location, while other courses, or parts of courses, will be delivered online or virtually to students at another location.
OA
Online - Asynchronous Delivery
Delivered fully online with no scheduled classes, and allows students to learn on their own schedule, in a flexible environment, within a certain time frame.
OS
Online - Synchronous Delivery
Delivered fully online with live, scheduled videoconference classes. The instructor and the students in the course engage with the course content and each other at the same time, from different locations.

Academics
Academics programs are part of the School of Academics, Applied Arts & Tourism. These programs prepare students for continuation to other post-secondary programs at CNA or partnering institutions.
Applied Arts
Applied Arts programs are part of the School of Academics, Applied Arts & Tourism. These programs prepare students for employment or self-employment in specific industries and/or continuation to other post-secondary programs at CNA or partnering institutions.
Business
Business programs are part of the School of Business and IT. These programs provide students with a number of career paths in Office Administration, Business Administration and Business Management.
Engineering Technology
Programs under the School of Engineering Technology provide students with specialized skills, meaningful work-terms and other experiential learning opportunities to put their theoretical learning into practice and showcase their knowledge and skills in a real-life work setting.
Health Sciences
Programs under the School of Health Sciences combine comprehensive class-room instruction with experiential learning and include high-fidelity simulation and relevant clinical placements. Graduates of programs under this school will meet identified human resource needs within the health care sector and provincial workforce.
Industrial Trades
Industrial Trades programs are part of the School of Natural Resources and Industrial Trades. These programs are designed to be industry responsive and meet labour market demands at home and nation-wide in a broad range of economic sectors.
Information Technology
Information Technology programs are part of the School of Business and IT. These programs are designed to prepare students for a career in the areas of coding, web development, cybersecurity, infrastructure support, network design, and information management.
Natural Resources
Natural Resources programs are part of the School of Natural Resources and Industrial Trades. These programs are designed to be industry responsive and meet labour market demands at home and nation-wide in a broad range of economic sectors.
Tourism
Tourism programs are part of the School of Academics, Applied Arts & Tourism. These programs prepare students for employment in specific industries and/or continuation to other post-secondary programs at CNA or partnering institutions.

Credential Definitions

Advanced Diploma
Programs that offer this credential are approved programs of study consisting of in-depth training for graduates of a diploma program or equivalent. Advanced Diploma Programs will normally:
  1. be prescribed over a minimum of one semester;
  2. be comprised of a minimum of 20 credits.
Applied Degree
Programs that offer this credential are approved programs of study consisting of a prescribed combination of courses that must address:
  1. alignment with an applied occupational area of practice.
  2. capstone project requirements including an approved oral defense evaluation.
  3. alignment with the Maritime Degree Level Qualifications Framework for baccalaureate degrees.

Applied Degree Programs will normally:
  1. be comprised of a minimum of 120 CU credits, with a minimum of 84 CU credits from an approved area of practice.
  2. be prescribed over a minimum of 8 full 15-week semesters of study (or equivalent). The maximum CU credits awarded are as follows:
    • 3 CU credits for a program course regardless of laboratory, shop, study, or other experiential hours
    • 6 CU credits for a capstone project regardless of duration
    • 18 CU credits in a standard 15-week semester
    • 9 CU credits in a compressed (intersession or summer session) semester
  3. require an approved occupational experience.
Certificate
Programs that offer this credential are approved programs of study consisting of a prescribed combination of courses that must address:
  1. occupational skill development;
  2. academic or general study;
  3. self interest or personal growth.
Certificate Programs will normally:
  1. be prescribed over a two semester period;
  2. be comprised of a minimum of 40 credits; and
  3. consist of a maximum of seven courses per semester.
Certificate of Achievement
A certificate of achievement is awarded upon successful completion of a program of less than one academic semester or upon completion of an academic course for which learning is measured and evaluated.
Certificate of Participation
Any non-formalized course, seminar, workshop which addresses one or more of the following areas of study: occupational skill development, academic study, personal interest/growth, for which specific learning or performance is not measured or evaluated.
Diploma
Programs that offer this credential are approved programs of study consisting of a prescribed combination of courses that must address:
  1. occupational skill development.
  2. academic or general study.
  3. self interest or personal growth.
Diploma Programs will normally:
  1. be prescribed over a minimum of a 4-semester period.
  2. be comprised of a minimum of 80 credits; and
  3. consist of a maximum of 7 courses per semester.
Microcredential-Digital Badge
A certification of assessed competencies that is additional, alternative, complementary to or a formal component of a formal qualification. A microcredential recognizes the learner’s achievement of a set of competencies. The three core features are:
  1. They are based on competencies that are in demand by industry and employers.
  2. The focus is on demonstrating mastery of competencies.
  3. The learner is awarded a digital certification upon successful demonstration of the competencies.
A badge is a digital representation of a microcredential. Badges will contain the name of the issuing institution, the competency achieved, and the level of achievement. Badges contain metadata on the nature of the competencies verified and their assessment instruments.
Post Diploma
A post diploma is a diploma to be issued upon successful completion of a minimum two-semester program that requires either graduation from a recognized two or three-year post-secondary diploma or degree, or a combination of other post-secondary work and industry experience acceptable to the College as an entrance requirement.
