2013 was a busy year at College of the North Atlantic. Below are some of the stories from the past 12 months that made headlines in Newfoundland and Labrador, and around the country.
Jan 16 - CNIB marked an eye safety milestone in Newfoundland and Labrador on Jan. 16 as it partnered with CNA to host its 100th Eye Safety Workshop. Since it was officially launched in October of 2010, more than 3,000 workers in Newfoundland and Labrador have participated in CNIB’s eye safety program. Feb. 28 - On Feb. 28 CNA and the State of Qatar announced the Canadian and Qatari partners’ agreement to an extension of the Comprehensive Agreement. The partnership represented the largest international post-secondary agreement involving a North American educational institution. Feb. 18 - Deep water seabed surveying, navigation and control systems for field robots, and improving cyber security measures were among the 10 academic-led research and development projects which received more than $1.7 million in total funding from the Research & Development Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador (RDC). The investment, announced on February 28, leveraged more than $10 million from others sources. CNA’s involvement included the transformation of shipping containers into dormitories for use as student housing or as disaster relief shelters. Mar. 7 - Holly Morris believes the sharing of ideas and knowledge is the key to teaching excellence. In that spirit, she wears many hats. Perhaps that is the reason the Society of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education selected her as one of five recipients of the 2013 College Sector Educator Award. Mar 12 - In March, Digital Animation graduate Zachary Green continued to collect accolades for his digital short film, fittingly titled, The Collector. Apr. 4 - Patrick Dwyer of Fogo Island took a step just a little bit closer to his idol in April. The Music Industry and Performance graduate from CNA entered a cover artist contest, performing a stellar version of the Slash hit song Anastasia which was recognized in the top 20. Apr. 30 - Crysta Perak’s goal is simple, to create and tell inspiring stories. A 2010 graduate of the Film and Video Production program at CNA, Crysta and a travel companion were embarking on a journey to Peru where she will create a documentary about their many experiences. May 3 - CNA was recognized with two awards from the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education (CNIE) at the annual conference in Ottawa on May 2. CNA received awards of Excellence and Innovation for Instructional Design/Teaching and Learning, and Educational Practice/Collaboration. May 10 - Keir Madsen, an Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Technician (AMET) student at CNA’s Gander campus, was presented with a scholarship from Helicopter Foundation International in May. Keir received the $2,500 international Maintenance Technician Certificate Scholarship, handed out as part of HELI-EXPO 2013 March 4-7 in Las Vegas, Nevada. June 4 - Representatives of CNA met with the residents of Lord’s Cove on the Burin Peninsula on June 4 to discuss the findings of a community-based qualitative research study. The study, entitled It’s Just Nice to See the Light on Again, explored the social implications of establishing research facilities in rural Newfoundland and Labrador – specifically Lord’s Cove, which is the home of CNA’s Wave Energy Resource Centre (WERC). June 18 - Lenny Kravitz might set the mood for each episode of Ice Pilots NWT with his song Fly Away, but CNA graduate Matt Evans is one of the few people tasked with keeping the show’s planes in the skies. The Gander native graduated from CNA’s Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Technology program in 2012 and within a day had employment waiting for him with Buffalo Airways, the company that is the focus of the popular History Television docu-series which follows the adventures of “Buffalo Joe” and his maverick Arctic airline. July 5 - In what can only be described as a trip of a lifetime, four lucky CNA alumni made the journey from Newfoundland and Labrador to the State of Qatar in July. The graduates were chosen from numerous applicants to attend the 10-year anniversary celebrations at College of the North Atlantic-Qatar (CNA-Q). Graduates submitted essays outlining why they should be chosen for the trip, vying for the four available seats to the A Decade of Excellence celebrations. July 8 - With an investment of $1.5 million from the federal-provincial Labour Market Agreement, the Sector Skills program provided training and work experience to individuals who are helping to meet Newfoundland and Labrador’s growing labour demand.

Aug 23 - In August, Roger Andrews packed a bag from his home on the east coast and headed to the small town of Burlington on the Baie Verte Peninsula – population 350. Andrews was one of the eight chefs selected to provide food for The Gathering, a celebration of Newfoundland Fire, Food and Music. Aug. 23 - In August, CNA announced the revival of its machinist program through a dual-campus delivery model. The new offering would be delivered jointly by the Placentia and Prince Philip Drive campuses with the theory component being delivered at Prince Philip Drive (PPD) campus in St. John’s, and the majority of the hands-on practical work done at the specialized machinist shops in Placentia. Sept. 18 - In September CNA was recognized with two awards from the National University Technology Network (NUTN), a much sought after global awards program which recognizes significant contributions, innovation and leadership by individuals and organizations in applications of technology to teaching and learning in higher education. Sept. 23 - Sixteen graduates of CNA were presented with Governor General Academic Medals on Sept. 23 at Government House in St. John’s. The medals were awarded to CNA graduates for achieving the highest overall average upon completion of their diploma-level program in 2013. Oct. 29 - CNA ranks third in Canada among public colleges for applied research income according to Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges, an inaugural report issued by Research Infosource Inc. The ranking, announced in October, is based on a college’s ability to attract funding investments for applied research and development. In the 2012 fiscal year, College of the North Atlantic attained $6,026,000 in research income with 25 faculty members involved in applied research projects. Nov. 13 - On Nov. 13 CNA announced it was taking its Journalism program where no college or university in Canada has gone before - to the skies. As part of its photojournalism course, CNA will offer instruction in drone journalism. Nov. 26 - CNA is at the forefront of non-destructive testing thanks to an investment from aerospace leader Bombardier Aerospace. Announced on Nov. 26, the $250,000 investment will help further develop the non-destructive testing technician (NDT) facility at the college’s Port aux Basques campus. The investment will be dedicated to NDT training, testing, and research and development in the aerospace field, building upon the campus’ existing strength in this discipline, and will also continue to build NDT resources within the community. Dec. 3 - A curious child by nature, Edward Mishaud always strived to solve problems. Fast forward over 30 years and Edward can be found in Geneva, Switzerland doing just that for the United Nations where he is helping to tackle the global problem of HIV/AIDS.
