Pamela Walsh, President of College of the North Atlantic, accepts the Growth In Domestic/Export Markets award from Michael Wilson, President of the St. John’s Board of Trade, during the 9th Annual Business Excellence and Business Achievement Awards ceremony held on Wednesday, December 5 at the Delta Hotel in St. John’s.

December 6, 2001 - College of the North Atlantic was named the winner of the Growth In Domestic/Export Markets Award sponsored by the St. John’s Board of Trade at the group’s 9th Annual Business Excellence and Business Achievement Awards ceremony held at the Delta St. John’s on Wednesday, December 5.

The college was nominated because of its recently signed $500 million contract with the State of Qatar in the Middle East to develop a comprehensive college of technology there.

"College of the North Atlantic is a very proud recipient of the St. John's Board of Trade Growth in Domestic/Export Markets Award,” says Pamela Walsh, President of College of the North Atlantic.

“We are very honoured to have our efforts recognized by such a distinguished organization. We hope this award will raise awareness about the very exciting things the college is doing right now and increase our opportunities and capacity to do many more exciting things in the future."

The 10-year agreement signed with Qatar will see College of the North Atlantic essentially operate a campus in that country using Canadian curriculum and programming. The campus, which will be known as College of the North Atlantic – Qatar, is the college’s nineteenth, however it will be the first outside the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

"The St. John's Board of Trade’s recognition of our Qatar campus project, the largest international post-secondary education contract ever awarded in Canada, further reinforces the college's commitment to economic development in the province and our belief in the capabilities and competitiveness of Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans in the international market," says Walsh.

"The award is also much appreciated recognition of the tremendous effort put forward by many people at the college, Minister Kelly and her staff at the Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education, and our many friends in industry. This recognition reaffirms our continuing commitment to work with our public and private sector partners for the betterment of the province."
