Justin Bennett, a Skills Canada Competitor and College of the North Atlantic (CNA) graduate, has been offered the opportunity to travel to the WorldSkills Americas Competition in São Paulo, Brazil to compete as the Team Canada competitor in Cabinet-Making.
Skills/Compétences Canada is a national not-for-profit organization that works to promote careers in skilled trades and technologies. Skills Canada members across the country deliver Skills Canada Provincial and Territorial Competitions each spring. Gold medal winners from those competitions go on to compete at the Skills Canada National Competition and a strong performance nationally can sometimes send a competitor to international competition.
“I am really looking forward to the trip to Brazil and the opportunity to represent Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador in the competition,” said Bennett who will be making the journey with his coach and College of the North Atlantic instructor, Kelly Tompkins. “I am expecting to experience a higher level of competition than in previous years and I hope I can do Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador proud while showcasing my skills.”
Bennett has won a silver medal at the Skills Canada National Competition and was chosen to be part of Team Canada based on his strong showing at Nationals in 2011 and 2012.
“This is a wonderful accomplishment for Justin, both professionally and personally,” said Ann Marie Vaughan, CNA’s President and CEO. “For the two years that he represented the college at Skills Canada Provincial and National Competitions, he did so with a level of professionalism and expertise that we are extremely proud of. I know that Justin will continue to represent the college, province and country to the best of his ability on the world stage.”
Considering Bennett’s award-winning performance at Skills Canada National Competitions and his strong academic showing at CNA, there is no doubt that he will continue to do the province and country proud while showing representatives from over 31 regions and countries of North, South, Central America and the Caribbean the high level of training in Newfoundland and Labrador.
