Connecting students, businesses and community

Students attending post-secondary institutions in Corner Brook have a series of special events to look forward to this year.

Campus City Connect is a joint project between College of the North Atlantic (CNA), Grenfell Campus of Memorial University, Academy Canada, and the City of Corner Brook.  According to Bern Stratton, CNA Corner Brook campus administrator, a committee was formed in 2011 to plan special events for the beginning of the 2012 school year.

"The goal of the committee was to find ways to bring all the institutions together and to make Corner Brook the city of choice for post-secondary education, to educate businesses in the area of the impact of the post-secondary institutions and students, to make Corner Brook a welcoming community for students, and to foster positive camaraderie among post-secondary students,” says Stratton.

Events are set to start next week after registration concludes for CNA’s Corner Brook students.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5, the City Connections event at Margaret Bowater Park will highlight a number of businesses and volunteer organizations. Students will learn about Corner Brook’s vibrant business and not-for-profit sectors. Music will be provided by Nick Hamlyn and prizes will be awarded.  The event runs from 5-7 p.m.

This summer’s blockbuster The Avengers will be featured on a giant inflatable screen at the Pepsi Studio parking lot from 8-10 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6. If you don’t have a car, you can bring a lawn chair. Entry is $2 per person, with proceeds going to charity.

Finally, A Rockin’ Time will feature some of the province’s best entertainers. From 7 p.m. to midnight, performers will include Goldwithy, Andrew James O’Brien and the Searchers, The Navigators, and Sherman Downey and the Silver Lining. This all-ages show will have an open floor for that big concert feel. People are asked to bring along a donation in support of the local food bank.

Students looking for a free ticket for A Rockin’ Time can contact Jennifer Butler at 637-6200, ext. 6546, or they may check with their school representatives. For information on how the general public can get a free ticket, contact RBC at 66 West Street in Corner Brook.
