Gerry Crewe, Commercial Cooking instructor at College of the North Atlantic, was named Atlantic Chef of the Year.

March 9, 2001 - Gerry Crewe, Commercial Cooking (Advanced) instructor at College of the North Atlantic, was named Atlantic Chef of the Year by the Canadian Federation of Chefs and Cooks at their Atlantic Conference held in Charlottetown, PEI on March 3.

In January, Crewe was named Chef of the Year for Newfoundland and Labrador by the provincial Association of Chefs and Cooks and will now go on to represent the Atlantic region at the National Convention being held in Halifax in June when the Canadian Chef of the Year will be named.

“This was a very big surprise for me,” says Crewe.

“I’m very honoured to receive this award. It’s great to know our skills are being recognized outside the province. It’s great for the college, great for our students and great for the industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

This is the first time Crewe has won the Atlantic award, named the Alex Clavel Memorial Award after the famous chef from Nova Scotia. And while he’s very pleased to have won, he says being named the province’s chef of the year was a more important achievement for him.

“The Newfoundland and Labrador award means more to me than any other,” he says.

“That one is voted on by the people I work with on a daily basis and to have their respect means a lot to me.”

Still, the Canadian Chef of the Year award would look good in his dining room.
