March 8, 2001 - College of the North Atlantic was one of 16 educational institutions in the world to win an award in the WebCT 2001 Exemplary Course Project.
The college won for its course Normal Functional Movement designed by faculty member Lucy Miller.
"I am delighted but not surprised that Lucy's course has been recognized as an international winner. Lucy has dedicated her considerable expertise and enthusiasm to continuously improving this course." says John King, Manager of the Distributed Learning Centre.
WebCT is the world’s leading provider of integrated e-learning systems and the winning courses represent the “gold standard” in higher education e-learning. The winning courses were selected on the basis of academic rigor and content robustness.
While honouring the 2001 Exemplary Course winners and honorable mentions, WebCT also provided special recognition to Pearson Education Publishing and Nada Borden of College of the North Atlantic, who was nominated for the Exemplary Course Project. Borden is teaching with a Pearson e-pack which she developed entitled Accounting, Volume I & II, Canadian Fourth Edition, by Horngren, Harrison, Bamber and Lemon. As a result of this nomination, the WebCT Exemplary Course Project will be expanded next year to include a track for publisher e-packs.
Winners for this second annual WebCT Exmeplary Course Project were selected from a record number of entries. The study was conducted for WebCT by Dr. David Graf, Executive Director of Technology at the Fischler Graduate School of Education and Human Services at Nova Southeastern University in California and by Maisie Caines, WebCT Faculty Development Specialist at College of the North Atlantic, Clarenville campus.
Selection of winning courses was a multi-stage process which began with a review of the exemplary course evaluation rubric that Graf and Caines developed for last year’s project. Representatives from the WebCT Institutes – colleges and universities which have a strategic relationship with WebCT – worked with Graf and Caines to enhance the rubric, which focuses on academic rigor and content robustness. Graf and Caines then evaluated all entries, as did their WebCT Institute collaborators.
“Virtually the only thing the WebCT 2001 Exemplary Courses have in common is their exceptional use of technology to deliver academic excellence,” says Carol Vallone, president and CEO of WebCT.
“Otherwise, they couldn’t be more different: they cover subjects ranging from music to mathematical modeling, come from large public institutions and small private colleges, from all over the world. This incredible diversity shows not only how widespread e-learning has become in higher education – but how mission critical learning technologies have become on campuses everywhere.”
