College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Prince Philip Drive campus will be hosting the third annual Canada’s Association of Information Technology Professionals (CIPS) Women in Technology event on May 4th.
Over 200 women have been confirmed to attend the event, closing in on last year’s total of 250 participants. This year’s event theme is 2013 – Be with IT! The format is a one-day conference that is outside the participants’ typical experience – as they will be exposed to intelligent women currently working in the IT industry throughout the province. Each presenter will illustrate how a career in IT can be a meaningful and prosperous career choice.
Mary Vaughan, CNA’s Dean of Business and IT, believes that conferences such as these show how great a career can be in this area.
“The information technology industry within the province is a leading employment field that will continue to grow. The Women in IT conference shows our young females that this can be a fun an exciting career for them to consider.”
Vaughan says, “The day is full of leading female IT professionals interacting with the girls in hands-on activities with the goal of inspiring them in the area of IT. Girls now are so technologically advanced and will use IT socially and professionally. It is our goal to show how great a career in this area can be.”
As Renee Pendergast, CNA Information Technology instructor and conference chair explains, the girls attending will get to see what the information technology sector has to offer and they will also have a chance to see how the area of technology can be very rewarding.
"Women entering the technology sector are declining; the CIPS Women in Technology Conference targets Grade 9 students and shows them that pursuing a career in information technology can be very rewarding."
