Practical Nursing ceremony held at Corner Brook campus

College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Corner Brook campus celebrated its Practical Nursing pinning ceremony on Friday, January 15 at the Greenwood Inn and Suites. Thirty-three students representing 23 communities were awarded diplomas and pins.

The President’s Medal for Outstanding Achievement was presented to Jennifer Park of Gillams by Bern Stratton, Corner Brook campus administrator. Park was also presented the College of Licensed Practical Nurses Highest Academic Standing Award.

The Highest Clinical Proficiency Award is awarded by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses to the graduating student who has excelled in all seven clinical areas, the recipient of this award was Lori Mackey of Corner Brook.

Other awards and recipients included: Clinical Excellence in Mental Health Nursing, Sharon Chynn-Anstey; Clinical Excellence in Surgical Nursing, Jennifer Park and Julie Park; Clinical Excellence in Community Health Nursing, Jessica Dwyer, Courtney Morgan, and Amanda Pynn; Clinical Excellence in Pediatric Nursing, Deidre Janes; Clinical Excellence in Obstetrical Nursing, Diane Cunard; Clinical Excellence in Medical Nursing, Chere Rice; Clinical Excellence in Long Term Care Nursing, Marie Lawrence and Clinical Excellence in Consolidated Practice, Kelly Bennett.

Speakers at the ceremony included the Honorable Gerry Byrne, MP for Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte; Terry Loder, MHA for the Bay of Islands, brought greetings from Premier Danny Williams and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador; Corner Brook Mayor Neville Greeley; Cyril Organ, Vice President, academic and student services brought greetings on behalf of the CNA President Jean Madill and the Board of Governors Chair, Terry Styles; and Bern Stratton, Corner Brook campus administrator.

Greetings were also brought from the many of CNA’s partners, they included; Joan Rowsell, director of the Centre for Nursing Studies; Paul Fisher, executive director and registrar of the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador; Catherine MacDonald, vice-president Professional Practice/Chief Nursing Officer, Western Regional Integrated Health Authority and Sherry Rumbolt, RN, was the guest speaker for the graduation. Practical Nursing graduate Alisha Christopher provided the valedictory speech on behalf of the 2008-2009 graduating class.
