Vale Inco Newfoundland & Labrador Limited (VINL) has strengthened its commitment to the provincial workforce by investing $234,000 in post-secondary scholarships at College of the North Atlantic (CNA) over the next four years.
These scholarships will focus on areas that will support the construction and operation of Vale Inco’s Long Harbour Processing Plant. Vale Inco’s scholarships will be provided to students participating in skilled trades, engineering technology and women in non-traditional programming. More than 230 individual scholarships will be awarded over the life of the scholarship program with each one awarded based on academic standing and financial need.
“The commitment that Vale Inco is showing to the college, and our students, is unprecedented,” noted Vice-President of Development and College Advancement, Corinne Dunne. “These scholarships will support deserving students as they work towards their career aspirations and also provide the province with a ready and capable workforce.”
When this latest commitment is combined with Vale Inco’s previous donations (totaling $110,000 from 2004-2008), the mining giant becomes the single largest scholarship donor in CNA’s history with a commitment of $344,000 over eight years.
Tom Paddon, Vale Inco’s General Manager for Newfoundland and Labrador, noted that “The partnership Vale Inco has developed with the college since the project development began has been a win-win for both organizations. We have a number of the college’s graduates working for us and we’ve been very pleased with the quality of the graduates from the college’s technology and trades programs. From a business development perspective, continuing this partnership and the scholarship program makes perfect sense.”
