College of the North Atlantic has introduced BrowseAloud voice interactive software to its website, making surfing the internet easier for site visitors.

BrowseAloud software is a unique solution from Texthelp Systems which is designed to assist those with learning difficulties, dyslexia, mild visual impairments or where English is a second language. The software assists the user by reading online content aloud, highlighting each word as it is spoken.

By introducing this software, the college hopes to improve accessibility to its programs and services and provide additional supports to current and prospective students, in particular those with applicable disabilities.

“We are quite excited about another tool to enhance our services to learners,” said Libby Chaulk, associate vice-president of learner services and a member of the college’s provincial advisory committee on disability services. “CNA is committed to accessibility and responsiveness to maximize opportunities for our learners to achieve their educational goals. For our learners with disabilities, the availability of adaptive technologies such as BrowseAloud enables the removal of barriers to learning.”

The software gives the user full control and does not impact website performance. The technology is unique in its delivery and free to the user.

By adding BrowseAloud to the college website, CNA is striving to ensure its mandate of accessibility for all is implemented not only at all of its campuses, but also through its online services.

To use BrowseAloud, visitors simply download the free plug-in available at www.browsealoud.com and hover their mouse over the text to have it read aloud to them.
