College of the North Atlantic’s School of Tourism and Natural Resources has launched a new website with the aim to reach a broader audience and increase the number of people entering the school’s various program offerings.

The website houses information surrounding the eight Tourism and Natural Resources programs offered throughout the Corner Brook, Bonavista, Prince Philip Drive (St. John’s) and Bay St. George campuses, as well as testimonials from graduates, academic information and faculty member biographies.

“Our marketing efforts have been too narrow, especially in an era where technology seems to be everywhere and ever changing,” said Brent Howell, Dean of Tourism and Natural Resources. “While we will need to continue using traditional tools such as print media, radio and television there is clearly a need to use technology that is used by members of society in an effort to increase program registrants.”

The website will also provide tangible evidence of the exciting nature of the programs within the School of Tourism and Natural Resources. These programs lend themselves to “saying it in pictures” more than any other slate of programs offered by the college.

“I think students and prospective students will be very happy when they visit the website,” said Howell. “We believe the site is both interactive and informative and will provide vital information without having to work too hard to find it.”

The school is home to a variety of study areas that have shown to be an integral part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy and in various regions throughout the country, including; Adventure Tourism – Outdoor Recreation, Conservation Law Enforcement, Environmental Technology (Co-Op), Fish and Wildlife Technician, Forest Resources Technician, GIS Applications Specialist (Post Diploma), Hospitality Tourism Management and Natural Resources Technician.

Graduates from all programs can expect to find a wide variety of technician/technologist level positions and entry level positions with significant opportunity for upward mobility. In some instances, graduates might explore the opportunity of forming their own business enterprise using skills acquired through completion of their program.

All programs in the school have significant credit transfer agreements with a variety of Canadian universities, providing graduates with the opportunity to complete various degree programs while enjoying advanced standing. These agreements have the net effect of reducing the time and money required to complete a degree.

“While there are many variables associated with obtaining employment the fact is that the labour market situation for our graduates is quite positive and starting salaries remain competitive,” said Howell. “Very good opportunities exist for our graduates.”
