College of the North Atlantic (CNA) students made the most of their experience in the Middle East recently during the first annual International Business Case competition held at the college’s Qatar campus.
The two teams from CNA Newfoundland and Labrador were in Doha from March 9-15 representing the Grand Falls-Windsor campus and the Distributed Learning Service virtual campus.
College of the North Atlantic-Qatar (CNA-Q) hosted 15 teams from universities and colleges throughout the Gulf region and Canada.
Both CNA teams fared well with the Grand Falls-Windsor team finishing in seventh spot and the Distributed Learning Service virtual campus taking 10th place.
“On behalf of our team I would like to thank CNA Newfoundland and Labrador and CNA-Q for this amazing experience,” says Sarah Kelly, a business student at Grand Falls-Windsor campus. “We were given the opportunity to not only use our education in real-life situations but to meet new friends and learn about a different culture.”
She adds that the experience illustrates how CNA prepares its students for the real world.
“During this week our team learned lessons that could not be taught in any book. From meeting new friends, learning about different cultures, to being put to the ultimate test; it has been my most memorable and valuable experience yet.”
The Grand Falls-Windsor team was comprised of Eun Jae You, a Business Management (Accounting) student from South Korea, who is presently living in Grand-Falls Windsor; Amy Windsor, a Business Management (Marketing) student from Grand Falls-Windsor; Kelly, a Business Management (Human Resources/Marketing) student; Kenneth Williams of Charolottetown in Labrador, a student in Comprehensive Arts and Science-Transfer; and Justin Tizzard, a Business Management student from Pilley’s Island.
The Distributed Learning Service virtual campus team was made up of Andrew Bailey Hibbits, a Business Management (Human Resources) student from Stephenville; Lyndsey Power, a Business Administration student from Mount Carmel; Adam Maracle, a Business Administration student from Yellowknife; and Joshua Snook, a Website Administration student from Harbour Breton.
“My experience in Qatar proved a very important point – that distance learning is just as good as on-campus learning,” says Hibbitts. “It's not for everyone but there are personalities out there such as myself who love the flexibility and convenience. It takes discipline but I love it and would recommend it.”
He says they had a fantastic team for the Case competition.
“Together we formed the first distance learning team to compete, and I hope that it will encourage other Distance Learning students to get involved. Between the impressive technology provided by the college and applications available on your home computer, it is easy to do so! It was an extraordinary experience and we met lots of friends along the way.”
