College of the North Atlantic (CNA) students are making the most of their experience in the State of Qatar where they are taking part in the first annual International Business Case competition held at the college’s Middle East campus.
"This has been a wonderful learning experience for our students. They have been learning about other cultures and forming friendships with students from other colleges,” says Mary Vaughan, Dean of Business and Information Technology at CNA, noting the two CNA teams have been in Doha since March 9. The teams are representing the Grand Falls-Windsor campus and Distributed Learning Service virtual campus.
College of the North Atlantic-Qatar (CNA-Q) is hosting 15 teams from universities and colleges throughout the Gulf region and Canada. Without the assistance of information resources, teams of four students will analyze three cases and present their ideas and solutions to panels of judges. After three intense rounds of presentations and judging, the top four teams will be presented with one final case. The judging panels are comprised of members of the local business community and faculty from all areas of CNA-Q.
"The competition will require the students to work well as a team and know each other’s strengths,” states Vaughan. “This will tie together many of their program areas and the outcome promises to be a truly excellent learning experience."
Teams taking part at the international competition are coming from various institutions, including; Carnegie Mellon Qatar, Dubai Men’s College (UAE), Holland College (PEI), Nova Scotia Community College, Ras Al Khaimah Men’s College (UAE), Sharjah Men’s College and Women’s College (UAE), Stenden University (Qatar) and College of the North Atlantic.
This is the fourth year for CNA-Q’s Case competition, but the first time that participation has been extended beyond the Gulf Corporation Council countries.
“This year is exciting for us,” says Faye MacKay, Dean of Business Studies at CNA-Q. “We have grown this event from initially hosting only teams from within Qatar, to include schools from around the Gulf and now North America.”
