It was all about team spirit for the three College of the North Atlantic (CNA) teams participating in the national Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship (ACE) exposition in May.
The national competition in Toronto brought together more than 500 youth from more than 50 universities and colleges across Canada to compete in categories such as financial literacy and entrepreneurship education.
“Our campus had four students travel to the national exposition,” says Grand Falls-Windsor faculty advisor Susanne Ivey.
The Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Grand Falls-Windsor team gave a 30-minute presentation that included a recap of the year’s projects.
“It feels great to be recognized with this award. It’s nice to have been recognized at the national level because we are only a small fish in such a big sea.”
ACE St. John’s, consisting of eight members, gave a 25-minute presentation about their various projects and fundraising initiatives.
“It is great to be recognized,” says Dwight Hutchens, faculty advisor. “This is something for the team to build on for next year. In fact, the team is already busy getting ready for next year’s competition.”
The 12-member SIFE Stephenville team gave a 20-minute presentation on their project, outlining their work from concept to production including financial literacy events and their international project in Malawi, Africa where students collect recyclables and send the proceeds to the street children in a third world country.
“The Spirit award represents a team’s spirit in accomplishing the necessary criteria for the competition with conviction and care,” says faculty advisor Tom Rose. “It is the greatest feeling in having to take the stage and to see the team from CNA accept the award in front of the country with an audience of business leaders.”
Founded in the mid-1980s, ACE is a national charitable not-for-profit organization that is teaching and igniting young Canadians to create brighter futures for themselves and their communities. Working in partnership with business and higher education, ACE provides post-secondary students with the opportunity to gain entrepreneurial and leadership skills outside of the classroom.
