College of the North Atlantic (CNA) officially opened the new extension at its Happy Valley-Goose Bay campus on Friday, September 14.
The two-storey, $5.5 million extension is more than 16,000 square feet in size and houses new classrooms and lecture theatres, a library with archival space, a large meeting room, increased common areas and offices, and the Labrador Institute of Memorial University.
“College of the North Atlantic is leader in providing relevant skills training and professional development opportunities across our province,” said Education Minister Joan Burke. “The Happy Valley-Goose Bay campus plays an important role in producing graduates to meet labour market needs and to ensure the continued economic growth and development of Labrador. This is an exceptional facility that will meet the needs of current and future students.”
"With our significant investment in this facility, the Williams government is showcasing our ongoing commitment to Labrador, rural communities, education and infrastructure revitalization," said John Hickey, Minister of Transportation and Works and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs.
College President Jean Madill, concurs.
“This extension provides necessary enhancements to the campus that enable the college to respond to the current and future skills training needs of the region,” said President Madill. “The co-location of the Labrador Institute of Memorial University further enhances the province’s ability to address the post-secondary needs of Labrador and its people. The Williams government is to be commended and congratulated for recognizing the need and then finding the resources to bring this project to fruition.”
Dr. Michael Collins, associate vice-president (academic) with Memorial University, says having the college and the Labrador Institute in the same location will improve educational services for people in the region.
“Memorial University is pleased to co-locate its Labrador Institute here in this new facility with the College of the North Atlantic,” said Dr. Collins. “Our institutions collaborate in many ways here in Labrador – through the provision of first-year university courses, the Inuit Nursing Access program, second-year courses during spring intersession, for example – so sharing the same building is a fitting embodiment of that close working relationship.”
