College of the North Atlantic (CNA) students made a strong showing at the 11th Annual Canadian Skills Competition in Edmonton.

The competition was hosted by Skills Canada and ran from June 3-6 at the Northlands Agricom in Alberta’s capital city. It consisted of over 30 competition areas and hosted skilled trades people from across the country.

Thirteen of the 38 students competing from Newfoundland and Labrador study at CNA, three of whom took home medals.

Winning gold in the Graphic Design category was Geri Coady, a student at CNA’s St. John’s campus. Bronze medals were awarded to Andrew Penney of St. John’s campus for his work in the Autobody Repair category, and James Dillon, also of St. John’s campus, for his work in the Cooking category.

According to the Skills Canada website, the competition is designed to make students aware that their skills are valuable. It also allows them to work with new technologies as well as network with industry experts. Their goal is to “reward students for excellence, to directly involve industry in evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employer's needs.”

Congratulations to all national competitors and medal winners.
