College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Digital Animation program will launch its first ever film festival on June 15 in Stephenville. The festival, called the Student New Animation Philm Phestival or S.N.A.P.! Phestival, will be held at Clancy’s pub and will showcase the program’s work from the past three years. It is expected that the festival will be an annual event.
A few of the highlights include the Class of 2006’s collaborative project debut Object LV 127 and ¾, a reference to Ridley Scott’s 1979 hit Alien, and Quacked, a piece from the class of 2005 that will air at this year’s Nickel Independent Film and Video Festival in St. John’s.
To complement the pieces, the festival will feature a documentary on the making of Object LV 127 and ¾, a blooper reel, and the final demo reels for Quacked, a film about a guy who wakes up with a duck on his head.
Viewers will also have the opportunity to see some of the short films students have made over the last few years.
James Grace, instructor for the program says the festival gives the students an opportunity to display their work to people outside the program.
“It’s great for the students,” he says. “It gives them a taste of glory, a way to see their work in public on the big screen.”
Grace says the showcase has been held for the past two years informally and has done so well that they decided to make it a formal event.
He says it also encourages students to work towards a deadline, something they will no doubt experience in their careers.
“I believe we have a good program here,” says Grace. “And it’s about time we started showing our work to the community.”
The festival begins at 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday and has no cover charge.
