Gander graduates enter hot job market!

The 25 students who completed the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Technology program at CNA’s Gander campus in April had no worries about finding employment after graduation – the jobs found them.

The week before graduation, IMP Aerospace in Halifax sent each and every student an offer of employment letter – full-time, permanent employment at $17.28 per hour. At the same time, students were being contacted by other companies, some received offers of employment from Canadian Helicopters, Universal Helicopters, and Provincial Airlines, says Robert Dwyer, campus administrator.

“What a wonderful predicament to be in, a week before graduation trying to decide which job to accept!” Dwyer exclaimed.

“Students are out making plans to move to their new jobs, some are buying new cars. The excitement is electric.”

According to Dwyer, the Aviation industry is alive and well but experiencing a severe shortage of entry level workers. That means that this scene will be repeated many times over the next few years.

Aircraft Structural Repair students at the campus will finish up on June 14, and IMP Aerospace has already indicated that every one of them can expect to receive a letter.

Aviation programs have been a main stay at Gander campus for over 40 years. The employment level for graduates has always been very high and there was never a problem finding people interested in taking the training. In fact, for many years there was a significant wait list, with some people waiting up to three years for a seat.

However, for the first time in years, these programs have space available for enrollment, says Dwyer.

“There’s lots of room for people that want to get into this hot market... and currently no wait list to hold them back!”
