Qatari delegation to meet in capital city

Wednesday, July 21 - College of the North Atlantic will play host to a contingent of distinguished guests from Qatar in St. John’s beginning on Thursday, July 22.
They are here to participate in two days of meetings as members of the Joint Oversight Board (JOB) for the college’s Qatar project.
In 2001 College of the North Atlantic was successful in securing a 10-year agreement to develop a comprehensive technical college for the State of Qatar – a progressive, oil-rich nation in the Arabian Gulf. The financial value of the agreement is the largest ever awarded to a Canadian education institution for the provision of educational services.
The Joint Oversight Board for the project meets three times per year, with one of those meetings taking place in this province and the other two being held in Qatar. The JOB consists of representatives from College of the North Atlantic in Newfoundland and Labrador, and representatives from the State of Qatar.
College of the North Atlantic and the State of Qatar enjoy a very successful association that has opened up many opportunities for teaching and staff positions with the college for residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The relationship continues to provide ongoing opportunities for students and faculty to benefit from this international initiative.
Last summer, through their connection with College of the North Atlantic, 15 Qatari students traveled to the college’s Corner Brook campus for English as a Second Language (ESL) training. The successful trial will mean further ESL offerings for Qatar and other interested countries.
The college has also been able to secure additional contract training opportunities in the Middle East. One such example is the college’s three year agreement with the Ras Laffan Liquefied Gas Co. Ltd. to provide oil training to their employees. This agreement sees groups of Ras Laffan employees complete their training at the college’s Seal Cove campus near St. John’s, and is paving the way for the college to offer more such training to companies in many sectors in the Middle East.
