Shane Perran is the winning designer in CNA's web design contest.

February 11, 2004 – Shane Perran from St. John’s is the winner of College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) web design contest.

Perran, 30, is a self-taught web designer who has been working freelance in the industry for several years. The St. John’s native found out about the contest while exploring CNA’s website.

“I went to the site to check out multimedia programs at the college and saw the contest announcement,” he says.

The contest, which opened on November 10, 2003 and closed on December 12, 2004, had over 100 entries from around the globe. This is particularly significant, says CNA’s Web Steering Committee Chair Kevin Baker.

“We only advertised with the provincial media and on our website,” says Baker.

“To have such a global response indicates a large scope of activity on our site – there were entries from Norway, China, Qatar, the USA and other provinces in Canada. This is a great time, then, to upgrade our site for easier accessibility to information and a more current look for our users.”

Perran felt the site could use some work and was inspired to use his talents to contribute to a new look for the college. He didn’t expect to win.

“There’s a lot of content and it’s very challenging to manage,” he says.

“Also, even though I thought my design was fairly strong, where I wasn’t a college student or employee, I didn’t think I’d get a serious look.”

The Web Steering Committee was interested in selecting the best design for its website and therefore opened the contest to the public. However, many College of the North Atlantic students and graduates did enter and had a fantastic showing. In fact, once the contest was over, it was discovered that three of the four finalists were either graduates of the college, or currently enrolled in a college program. They included Scott Martin, who is enrolled in the Fish and Wildlife program at Corner Brook campus, Daniel Chapman, a Graphic Arts student at Prince Philip Drive campus, and Dana Hawco, who graduated from the Multimedia program at Clarenville campus in 1998.

Now that Perran has the $2,000 prize for his efforts, he says he may just take advantage of the program offering he was initially looking for on the CNA site.

“This might be a good time to enroll in the Multimedia program!”

College of the North Atlantic would like to thank all entrants for their efforts.
