February 10, 2004 β College of the North Atlantic (CNA) has recently had three of its programs nationally accreditated by the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS) and the Information Systems and Technology Accreditation Council (ISTAC). These programs include Programmer Analyst (Business) Co-op at Prince Phillip Drive campus, and two Programmer Analyst programs for Business and Networking at Grand Falls-Windsor campus.
In 1999, a memorandum of agreement was signed between CIPS, the Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education, and post-secondary training institutes to develop a process for the accreditation of IT programs offered through provincial educational institutions. The objectives of accreditation include: identification of those programs meeting industry standards; improvement of curriculum and training facilities; development of highly skilled instructional staff; and the provision of career mobility to graduates.
Greg Chaytor, Chair of Engineering and Information Technology at CNA, says this accreditation is an ongoing process at the college β one that ensures quality programming for students.
βThe latest steps in having IT programs accredited by CIPS will give our graduates greater recognition in the job market both provincially and nationally. It will also enable the college to articulate transfer opportunities to degree programs at other colleges and universities.β
