Business Administration students at the Corner Brook campus came up with some creative designs for the Western Star Project.

Business Administration instructors Michael Crant and Judy Woolridge cooked up a novel project for their students this spring. They were looking for a practical way for their first and second year students to put some of the skills they had learned into practice, and with the help of Western Star publisher Shawn Woodford, they came up with the Western Star Challenge.

Students were divided into teams and given 45 minutes to create a clothing ensemble suitable for a business interview. The twist was that the outfit had to be made entirely out of newspaper, and then modelled by a member of the team.

Crant says the students stepped up to the plate and effectively demonstrated what they had learned in their Workplace Skills course.

“In order to execute this project, team members needed to apply effective teamwork skills and strategies, manage time, remain on task, manage stress levels, resolve conflicts, establish leadership roles, practice ethics and so on,” he says.

“Students learned that in order to be effective in the workplace, individuals must effectively and strategically work together with team members in order to succeed. “
