College of the North Atlantic will be offering two new Contract Training and Continuing Education web-based programs. The Retail Skills and Personal Fall Protection programs will commence April 19.
The four week Retail Skills program will offer individuals a flexible, four-module course outline that will be a great asset to retail employers. The program prepares retail persons with additional training and for potential job promotion.
According to retailjobs.ca, a specialized job board leader in Canada for the retail sector, the retail job market is particularly healthy all across Canada. There are many opportunities available whether in-store or in support functions. The good health of the Canadian economy is benefiting all businesses—large groups and small stores, urban and rural.
The major topics for the program will include; communication in the retail sector, responsibilities of a retail salesperson, customer complaints and service recovery, retail pricing, common financial statements, retailing in Canada, entrepreneurship, business organization, teamwork and leadership skills and retail security.
Personal Fall Protection is a three-week workshop intended to educate participants on fall protection practices and procedures. Participants are introduced to situations where there is or may be a danger of workers falling.
Fall protection is required when employees are working at heights of 3.05 meters (10 feet) or more over the nearest safe surface. The purpose of this training is to ensure that students understand fall protection safety principles and how they apply to real work environments. At the end of the course, students will understand when fall protection is needed and the different equipment available for use.
Increasingly, occupational health and safety professionals are turning to the internet for their professional development needs. Employers, supervisors and workers all have responsibilities in reducing or eliminating falls from heights. Often times, employers see a loss in productivity as a result of falls on the job as well as during training. However, with training, employers and employees are better equipped to work in a safer environment resulting in less downtime and savings to the productivity of its workforce.
With CNA’s online web-based learning in these areas, professional development and less downtime is easily accessible.
Juanita Colbert, CNA’s Departmental Program Coordinator with Contract Training and Continuing Education, considers these types of web-based learning courses beneficial because individuals are not bound to a classroom.
“For many, the thought of online learning stirs up some apprehension, such as ‘Are my computer skills adequate? Will I ever meet classmates, or my teacher, in person? Can I really learn while I''m sitting at my kitchen table, sipping my coffee?’
“These days, online learning is more user-friendly and more interactive. There''s really no need for learning today to be bound to a physical time or place.”
