College now accepting applications for short-term programs

College of the North Atlantic is currently accepting applications for a number of new short-term training programs at various campus locations throughout the province.

Applicants for many of these programs may qualify for funding through the new Labour Market Agreement (LMA) and the new Strategic Training and Transition Fund (STTF) which could cover up to 100% of the cost of attending the college - including travel, accommodations, child care, books, tuition and more.

Programs include Marine Frontline Hospitality, Skills-4-Discovery (Career Exploration), Industrial Safety Passport, Computerized Office Administration Refresher, Construction Craft Worker, Custodial Service Worker, Personal Care Attendant/Home Support Worker, Frontline Hospitality Worker, Youth Exploring Trades, Tourism-related Training, Bridge Watch Technical Certificate, and Agricultural Training.

Marine Front Line Hospitality (Port aux Basques)
Duration: 25 weeks
Start Date: December 7, 2009
This program prepares learners for careers in front line tourism by focusing on the skills, competencies and attitudes necessary to meet the needs of industry. The program combines practical, classroom and hands-on learning including at-sea work placements. The training covers a variety of topics including introduction to tourism, dining room operations, bar and beverage operations, professional development, customer service, introduction to food preparation, computers and rooms division systems. Participants will also complete First Aid, WHMIS, Marine Emergency Duties as well as Hospitality NL’s Superhost and the National Food Safety Training program. 

Skills-4-Discovery – Career Exploration (Two locations: Gander & Corner Brook)
Duration: 12 weeks
Start Date: (Gander -- January 4, 2010) & (Corner Brook – January 11, 2010)
The Skills 4 Discovery – Career Exploration program is designed to help learners make decisions about a field of study and/or career path. It is a series of courses that include skills assessments, a self-assessment process, training in job readiness, professionalism, resume writing, basic computer skills and development of a skills portfolio.

Industrial Safety Passport (Offered at two locations: Burin and Grand Falls Windsor)
Duration: 11 weeks
Start Dates: (Burin – January 4, 2010) – (Grand Falls Windsor – February 1, 2010)
Be an asset to potential employers by completing the Industrial Safety Passport program. Health and safety in the workplace is becoming increasingly important to employers and this program is designed to be suitable for all individuals, regardless of previous skills or work experience. This program will provide an overview of standard principles as a minimum of good health and safety practice. Safety certifications provided in this program include shop safety, hand/shop tools, quality assurance/quality control, WHMIS, Confined Space Awareness, H2S Alive, Forklift Safety and Operations, Power Line Hazards and more.

Computerized Office Administration Refresher (Prince Philip Drive, St. John’s)
Duration: 20 weeks
Start Date: February 15, 2010
This refresher program will provide participants with the latest skills required to work in an office environment. There is a demand for office administration personnel and this program will prepare you for the job market. Learners enrolled in this program will refresh previous skills and learn about the latest trends in today’s workplace which include various software applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Keyboarding, workplace professionalism, bookkeeping, computerized accounting and business communications.
Entrance Requirements: High school graduation or equivalent plus at least 3 years experience working in an office/secretarial environment.

Construction Craft Worker (Offered in two locations: Happy Valley Goose Bay & Baie Verte)
Duration: 8 weeks
Start Date: (Happy Valley-Goose Bay - January 4, 2010) - (Baie Vert - January 4, 2010)
This program is designed to teach skills for working in an industrial environment as trades helpers or labourers. Over the 8 weeks students will learn to recognize safe and efficient work habits that are considered best practices in a trade shop, industrial or construction site, while being exposed to all three environments. Students will learn rigging techniques, basic hand and power tool use, standard first aid, WHMIS and fork lift training.

Custodial Service Worker (Burin)
Duration: 8 weeks
Start Date: January 11, 2010
This program will train participants in the skills and knowledge required to perform in several custodial/building maintenance positions such as those in school districts, hospitals, city facilities, private cleaning contractors, or with your own cleaning business. The program combines classroom instruction with daily hands-on experience with cleaning equipment. Various safety certifications covered in this program include WHMIS, OHS Committee training and First Aid.

Personal Care Attendant / Home Support Worker (St. Anthony)
Duration: 20 weeks
Start Date: January 11, 2010
There is a growing need for Personal Care Attendants/Home Support Workers for our aging population. This program will respond to the needs of the healthcare facilities and will cover various topics such as professionalism and ethics, interpersonal communication, principles of growth and development, personal care, hygiene and special treatments, safe operations of appropriate equipment, promotion of good mental health, and an introduction to palliative care. Hands-on practical experience through a clinical placement will provide learners with the necessary introductory experience to prepare for the workforce. The Personal Care Attendant / Home Support Worker program is in accordance with the Department of Health and Community Services curriculum standards for this profession.

Front Line Hospitality Worker (Baie Verte)
Duration: 8 weeks
Start Date: January 11, 2010
The tourism sector is a growing industry in our province. This program will change participants’ approach to customer service and customer satisfaction. Training areas specifically targeted in this program include front desk services, sanitary and housekeeping best practices, guest relations, food and beverage service including responsible alcohol server training, record keeping, and job search techniques.

Youth Exploring Trades (Bonavista)
Duration: 14 weeks
Start Date: January 18, 2010
Have you considered a career in trades? The Youth Exploring Trades program will provide participants with an opportunity to explore career options, develop employability skills and essential skills, and gain relevant knowledge and exposure to various industrial trades.

Tourism-related Training (St. Anthony) – 2 Program Offerings
Duration: 3 weeks
Start Date: Program 1 (January 18, 2010), Program 2 (February 15, 2010)
This program will provide students with knowledge and skills required to work more effectively in front-line staff positions in the hospitality and tourism industry. Students will be introduced to this industry sector, as well as critical entry level hospitality skills including customer service, working with others, professional telephone skills, sanitary practices, and serving visitors’ needs. Various safety certifications will be provided to learners in this program to prepare them to work efficiently in a safe work environment.

Bridge Watch Technical Certificate (Marine Institute Program offered in partnership with CNA)
Location: CNA, Port aux Basques Campus
Note: Applicants apply to CNA and admissions handled through Marine Institute. 
Duration: 27 weeks
Start Date: February 22, 2010
This program features 16 weeks of in-class instruction, required safety training and an eight-week at sea placement. The program trains participants to be effective members of a ship’s watch, both on deck and on the bridge, and to prepare participants to write the Transport Canada’s Bridge Watchman examination. Learners will also acquire Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training, tanker familiarization, sea experience and hands-on training.

Agricultural Training (Bay St. George)
Duration: 10 weeks
Start Date: March 22, 2010
This program is designed to provide knowledge of the agricultural industry and to teach specific skills for working in a farm environment as helpers or labourers. This program will enable students to recognize safe and efficient work habits that are considered best practices in a farm setting. Participants will be introduced to general farm operations, farm machinery, animal husbandry, soil composition and pesticide application. Learners will also participate in various workplace safety certifications.
