On Thursday, November 13, 2008, Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador, in partnership with College of the North Atlantic, will be hosting a conference for Level I female high school students in the Stephenville area. This is the first Skills Work for Women conference (SWFW) of six to be held this school year across Newfoundland and Labrador. Gander, Labrador City, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Burin and St. John’s will host the remaining five SWFW conferences.

The goal of the SWFW conference is to introduce skilled trades and technologies as first-choice career options to its participants. The conferences last a full day and involve shop tours, roundtable discussions with female mentors experienced in different skilled trades and technologies, and hands-on activities such as welding initials in a steel plate, moving the plough of a front-end loader or changing a tire.

“The response to SWFW conferences has been overwhelmingly positive; clearly many in the community are dedicated to creating equality in the workplace and ensuring that young women have access to information on all possible career paths,” said Skills Canada Executive Director Carole Ann Ryan.

“Through the partnership and support of College of the North Atlantic and female role models, we are excited to offer this tremendous opportunity for educators and students to come together and learn of the many successful career opportunities that exist in the skilled sector.”

Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador is a not-for-profit organization made up of students, educators, government, employers and labour groups. Together with its many public and private sector partners, Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador wants youth to understand the many opportunities, benefits and rewards of skilled and technological jobs. Improving the expertise and confidence of individuals pursuing technical careers will benefit all.
