STEPHENVILLE, NL – College of the North Atlantic (CNA) is celebrating a series of remarkable achievements, as highlighted in this year’s
Research Infosource’s Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges report.
The report places CNA at the forefront of applied research through its Office of Applied Research and Innovation (OARI) and the NL Workforce Innovation Centre (NLWIC).
CNA ranks:
- Eighth in Canada among research colleges, breaking into the Top 10 for the first time.
- Third in Canada among medium-sized colleges for research income at $12.3 million.
- Second in Canada among medium-sized colleges for research income growth, up 93.6 percent over last year.
- Second in Canada among medium-sized colleges for research intensity (funding per researcher).
- First nation-wide among medium-sized colleges in Granting Council Research Income Growth (percentage change from 2019-23) with an increase of 1,440.5 percent.
Elizabeth Kidd, CNA President and CEO, said she is thrilled to see such remarkable achievements.
“CNA has once again proven that we are a leader in innovation and excellence,” she said. “Ranking eighth in Canada among research colleges is a testament to the incredible work happening across our campuses. Our success is built on our investment in people, partnerships, and possibilities. Congratulations to our researchers, faculty, students and staff who make this happen every day. The future is bright at CNA, and I cannot wait to see where we go from here.”
Dr. Michael Long, Dean of OARI, said the competition for research funding can be fierce and investors want to see innovation with impact that also supports workforce and economic growth.
“Modern colleges operate in a highly advanced environment, where applied research projects deploy cutting-edge technology and specialized knowledge, but also need to equip users and learners with the skills to make innovation really work to their advantage,” Dr. Long said. “As applied research initiatives across Canada continue to grow in sophistication, we take great pride in being acknowledged as a leading institution in this field, and one where no research project moves forward without an industry partner and direct student involvement. The incredible teams we have at CNA’s Office of Applied Research and Innovation and the NL Workforce Innovation Centre are the real change agents in this respect.”
It's a sentiment echoed by Sharon McLennon, Director of the NL Workforce Innovation Centre.
“Another CNA great news story of applied research, innovation and teamwork that is driving our province’s workforce and economic development and connecting the dots with our industry and community research partners’ growing capacity to positively impact Newfoundland and Labrador’s labour market outcomes, now and into the future”, she said. “As we’ve seen with the past and this year’s recognition of CNA by
Canada’s Top 50 Research College’s reports, this is just the tip of the iceberg.”
