Brian Warr, MHA for Baie Verte – Green Bay; Dustin Angelo, President and CEO, Anaconda Mining; Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation (TCII) Minister Chris Mitchelmore; Trudy Barnes, CNA Vice President, International, Contract Training and Continuing Education; and, TCII Parliamentary Secretary Mark Browne at a media conference about an exciting mining research and development project.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced $250,000 to support a collaborative research and development (R&D) project between Anaconda Mining and College of the North Atlantic (CNA) to improve grade determination and control at Anaconda’s Point Rousse Project.

Minister Mitchelmore was joined by Brian Warr, MHA for Baie Verte – Green Bay; Dustin Angelo, President and CEO, Anaconda Mining; and Trudy Barnes, CNA Vice President, International, Contract Training and Continuing Education.

This project will develop and implement improved methods for determining ore grade. To determine gold concentration for grade control, different sorting methods will be developed to reduce the amount of materials shipped and increase valuable ore processed. Anaconda Mining will improve productivity, while increasing CNA’s research capacity.

To make this project a reality, Anaconda Mining is investing $90,000 cash and $102,500 in-kind while the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) College and Community Innovation Program – Applied Research and Development Grants is contributing $225,000 towards the project.

The project will lead to the development and training of students, recent CNA graduates and research assistants. Students from the Chemical Process Engineering Technology program will work on this project as part of their 12-week work term requirement. These students will be trained in sample collection and analysis.
