College of the North Atlantic (CNA) students won a record 48 medals at the 16 Annual Skills Canada Provincial Competition held in St. John’s on April 12, 2013. Nineteen of these award winners will form a significant part of Team Newfoundland and Labrador at the 19 Annual Skills Canada National Competition in Vancouver, June 5-8.

The roster was set as the results of the competition were announced at the college’s Prince Philip Drive campus in St. John’s. After the medals had been handed out, CNA competitors from 11 different campuses had laid claim to 48 medals; 19 gold, 16 silver and 13 bronze.
 
“I am very proud of the work our students – they did themselves and the college proud. The expertise and professionalism our students displayed throughout the competition speaks volumes to the quality of technical skills they have learned through the guidance of their instructors at CNA,” said Ann Marie Vaughan, President and CEO of College of the North Atlantic. “College of the North Atlantic students have received provincial, national and international recognition for their skills and knowledge in their trade. This is very exciting given the labour demand for these skills and it shows tremendous confidence in the college as we grow our trades and technical areas.”
 
At the nationals, 19 CNA gold medal winners will represent 11 campuses including Seal Cove, Prince Philip Drive, Bay St. George, Labrador West, Ridge Road, Bonavista, Port aux Basques, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Corner Brook, Burin, Placentia.
 
“The Skills Canada competition is a special event that we highlight on our calendars each year. The relationship we have fostered with the college always produces a quality event which, most importantly, is a valued learning experience for the students,” said John Oates, President of Skills Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador and Lead Campus Administrator at Prince Philip Drive campus. “Based on the results of the provincial competitions, I am confident that our team will be very successful at the national competitions being held in Vancouver in early June. Congratulations and best wishes to Team Newfoundland and Labrador.”
