Fry Family Foundation co-founder Darryl Fry was inducted into the Junior Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador 2012 Business Hall of Fame on May 24. Attending the ceremony were (l-r) Frank and Darryl Fry; Corinne Dunne, V.P. of Development and College Advancement at CNA; and Duane Nettles, Executive Director, Annunciation Mission, New Orleans, LA.

A long-time supporter of students at College of the North Atlantic (CNA) was inducted into the Junior Achievement of Newfoundland and Labrador 2012 Business Hall of Fame at a ceremony in St. John’s on May 24, 2012.

Darryl Fry, co-founder of the Fry Family Foundation, was honoured for his achievements in business and his philanthropic efforts.

Born and educated in Newfoundland and Labrador, Mr. Fry has gone on to become successful on the international business stage, but still maintains a strong commitment to the people of his home province.

The Fry Family Foundation supports a wide variety of causes, focusing on education, senior citizens, women and children in need, and nature.

More than 100 CNA students have received financial awards from the foundation since it began funding scholarships at the college in 2006.

“CNA students have not only received a practical education with the help of the Fry Family Foundation, they have also learned the value of philanthropy themselves, by participating in projects funded by the foundation,” says John Oates, Lead Campus Administrator for CNA’s St. John’s region. “Thanks to the foundation’s generous contributions, our students have travelled to New Orleans, Louisiana, to participate in the Rebuilding of New Orleans Project, which is helping to revitalize a community that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2006.”

Vice-President of Development and College Advancement, Corinne Dunne, says Mr. Fry’s commitment to CNA students is proof positive that he sees the value of supporting young people in their quest for higher education, and understands that there are some who cannot achieve that without the financial support of a scholarship.

“He also understands that experiencing the rewards of philanthropy are an equally valuable form of education, and thus his support for the Rebuilding of New Orleans Project is especially meaningful,” she says. “Mr. Fry and the Fry Family Foundation have been leaders in inspiring giving. That’s been the hallmark of the role they’ve played with the college.”

Mr. Fry began his career with American Cyanamid Company, and eventually spun off the company’s chemical business to found Cytec in 1993, serving as Chairman and CEO until his retirement in 1998.

The Fry Family Foundation was formed in 1997. It funds 29 scholarships and awards, including the James Sellars Apprenticeship Award, the CNA Leadership Achievement Award, the CNA Artist Scholarship, and the CNA Health Sciences Distinction Achievement Award, among others.
