Olivia Best of Swift Current, NL, has been awarded a voucher for $1,452, the cost of one year’s tuition at Newfoundland and Labrador’s public college, after being named the winner of the Winter Crew contest at College of the North Atlantic (CNA) .
Best is attending CNA to study Business Administration, without relying on student loans. After she moved to Clarenville to go to college, her parents moved to Fort McMurray to work, and helped pay for their daughter’s post-secondary education.
Now, Best is headed into the second year of her Business Administration program without needing her parents’ help with tuition costs. She plans to pursue a career with the RCMP, either as a police officer or a civilian member.
“I love learning the legal aspects of (the Business Administration program),” says Best, who’s also involved with the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team at the campus. “The business law course is a big part of it for me and I really like the marketing and human resources aspects too.”
She says winning free tuition ensures that she will be able to finish her program. “Mom was more excited than I was,” she says. “It will help out a lot – when you’re a student you don’t have much money. It’s a huge weight off my shoulders, and my parents’ shoulders.”
Business Administration is offered at campuses across the province and online through Distributed Learning.
