College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Film and Video Production program is celebrating the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base by creating a short film about tensions at the American Base during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
As this year marks the anniversary of the base’s opening and closing, the Film and Video Production program has chosen to celebrate the history of the base through their fifth annual Intersession Semester Short Film titled
High Alert.
Directed by John Mckinnon, written by Sarah Yetman and Zack Gillette, and produced by a crew of first year students,
High Alert stars Dane Kawaja, Emma Anderson, Ian Locke, Fred Cluett and Randy Burt.
The story follows David Rogers, an American teletype operator posted at the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base who has a fulfilling job, a loving girlfriend, and a secret to keep. After an urgent message is received, David’s world is turned upside down, and life as he knows it is about to change. With several key choices to make, will David make the right one? Or will he suffer the consequences of his actions?
Each year, Film and Video Production strives to centre the annual Intersession film projects around Newfoundland culture.
“This intersession semester is important for two reasons,” said Mckinnon. “First it teaches the students how to learn and grow as filmmakers, and second, they tell these stories through their medium of filmmaking – stories of Newfoundland that probably would have never been otherwise told.”
Premiering June 18 at the Stephenville Arts & Culture Centre at 7 p.m.,
High Alert will feature the film, a behind the scenes look, a documentary about a former American serviceman still residing in Stephenville, live music from the Corner Brook Jazz Ensemble and more.
