College of the North Atlantic’s Enactus Clarenville team was recognized in two out of three categories while participating in the Enactus Regional competition in Halifax last week.

The team took first runner-up in the TD Entrepreneur League, after being edged out by national champions Memorial University. The team’s seven-minute presentation outlined their partnership with CBDC Eastern Initiatives and local businesses to help develop and improve small business financial management skills. The Enactus Clarenville team described to a panel of 12 judges how they offered a series of evening classes teaching computerized accounting to small businesses.

The team also took first runner-up in the Scotia Bank Eco Living Challenge behind first place winners Memorial and Acadia universities. The team’s presentation outlined their partnership with the Ability Employment Corporation and the Town of Clarenville to institute curbside recycling in the town.

“This is my second regional competition and I am amazed at how much my own confidence in my presenting ability has grown,” said second-year Business Administration student Olivia Best. “My involvement with developing and running these projects and the competition itself has been such a great experience for both me and our team.”

“It was an amazing opportunity,” added first-year Business Administration student Darlene Hicks. “The regionals furthered my determination to continue with Enactus and our projects and I’m looking forward to bigger and better things next year.”

Faculty advisor Deidra Strowbridge said the experience was invaluable for the students and overall the team did great with the presentations.

“I was exceptionally pleased with our team’s performance,” said Strowbridge. “The quality of our projects and partnerships has helped make our small team competitive with the biggest teams and schools across Atlantic Canada.”

Enactus is a student-based organization found in over 60 colleges and universities throughout Canada. Its mission is to create a social, economic and environmental difference within our communities. With only 10 active members, Enactus Clarenville is the smallest chapter in the country, yet they manage to operate five on-going projects.
