Brent Howell, campus administrator of CNA’s Corner Brook campus, presents Valerie Francis with the President’s Medal for Outstanding Achievement. Francis was also awarded the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Highest Academic Standing Award.

The Corner Brook campus, College of the North Atlantic (CNA), celebrated its Practical Nursing Pinning Ceremony on Friday, January 12, 2007 at the Greenwood Inn and Suites. Twenty seven students representing 17 communities were awarded diplomas and pins.

The President’s Medal for Outstanding Achievement was presented by Brent Howell, campus administrator, CNA, to Valerie Francis of Burnt Islands. Francis was also awarded the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Highest Academic Standing Award in the practical nursing program.

The Highest Clinical Proficiency Award is awarded by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses to the graduating student who has excelled in all seven clinical areas and who has maintained a B+ average. The recipient of this award was Jennifer Brake of Corner Brook.

Other awards were presented for Overall Clinical Proficiency, Clinical Excellence in areas of practice, and perfect attendance in the clinical component of the program.

Other awards and recipients include: Clinical Excellence in Mental Health Nursing – Cliff Pittman; Clinical Excellence in Surgical Nursing – Valerie Francis;

Clinical Excellence in Community Health Nursing – Marie Fudge, Kim Caines, and Jeanette Barter; Clinical Excellence in Pediatric Nursing – Lloyd Hinks; Clinical Excellence in Obstetrical Nursing – Amanda House; Clinical Excellence in Medical Nursing – Sherri Lynn Noble; Clinical Excellence in Long Term Care Nursing – Lana Parsons; Progress Award for significant improvement in class and/or clinical during the program – Paula Tarrant; and recognition awards for perfect attendance in clinical practice – Valerie Francis, Lloyd Hinks, Marie Fudge, Lana Parsons, Paula Tarrant, and Dora Mullet.

Vicki King, a practical nursing graduate, provided the valedictory on behalf of the 2006 graduating class. Linda Roche, executive assistant to the Premier Danny Williams, brought greetings from the Premier and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Brent Howell brought greetings on behalf of Rebecca Roome, CNA president and CNA’s Board of governors. Howell also provided a convocation message to the graduates on behalf of Corner Brook campus. Greetings were also brought from the many partners: Elaine Caines read greetings from Joan Rowsell, director of the Centre for Nursing Studies; Paul Fisher, executive director and registrar of the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador, brought greetings on behalf of the College of Licensed Practical Nurses, and Susan Gilliam, CEO of Western Regional Integrated Health Authority, brought greetings from Western Regional Integrated Health Authority. Paul Fisher was the guest speaker for the graduation.
