School of Business receives ‘Best Practices’ designation

STEPHENVILLE, NL – College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) business portion of the School of Business & Information Technology (IT) have been given a “Best Practices” global designation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) during its most recent accreditation review.

There are six standards reviewed under the quality assurance report submitted by the college every fourth and eighth year of the programs’ accreditation cycle. The first two standards – leadership and strategic planning – involve general information updates and don’t require reporting. The remaining reporting standards involve topics, such as student, stakeholder and market focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; faculty and staff focus; and, process management.

These accreditation standards and criteria are designed to assist ACBSP member institutions in achieving performance excellence in business education.

While CNA has received “Best Practices” designations in the past, this is the first time the School of Business has achieved them in all four standards in one report. This is an academic coup that Steve Warren, Dean of Business & IT, says is a “great team win” which clearly demonstrates that CNA continues to do many great things as a leader in post-secondary education.

“This accreditation is not solely based on outlines and curriculum; it’s more institution wide,” Warren explained. “They look at the college at the macro level for things like employer satisfaction, student satisfaction, the number of awards, bursaries and scholarships that we give out; professional development for faculty. They are looking for quality that is in place across the college network. There were many stakeholders that played a significant role in this acknowledgement.”

Warren adds that receiving this designation has several benefits for CNA, with the primary one being that it shows that quality  is something embraced by the college as a post-secondary training institution overall, and is not something isolated to the School of Business & IT.
