Digital Animation graduate Zachary Green continues to collect accolades for his digital short film, fittingly titled,
The Collector. His most recent accomplishment is recognition from Applied Arts Magazine’s 2012 International Student competition. In 2012 he was recognized nationally by Applied Arts Magazine.
The two-minute production was accepted for screening at the National Film Festival for Talented Youth in Seattle, Washington. It tells the tale of Victor, a small robot that must collect to survive.
According to Green, he found inspiration from a couple of places – the main one being a commercial from 20 years ago.
“Some inspiration came from the 3D movie called
Nine (also produced by CNA Digital Animation) which tells a similar story about robots that collect bits of garbage from trash to repair themselves,” says Green. “I also got inspiration from a commercial about little hippos. I saw that commercial and thought that instead of eating bread crumbs, it could be about a robot that collects batteries to survive.”
It took approximately four-and-a-half months to create the two-minute, 15 second video.
“I couldn’t even begin to guess how many hours it took to complete. I started it in early January 2012 and finished it in May,” he says.
“It feels pretty great to have my reel in a festival outside of the country. I’m pretty ecstatic about it. This is the first time I’ve ever sent anything away to be judged. It’s always nice to get a bit of recognition for your work. It’s a humbling experience. It makes me appreciate it that much more and motivates me to want to do something better.”
Green, a native of Ramea, found employment as a 3D modeller at GRI Simulations Inc. in St. John’s after graduating from the Digital Animation program.
Brenda Tobin, Dean of Academics, Applied Arts and Tourism, says the win is a testament to the world class education students receive at CNA.
“To take first place in an international competition is a huge accomplishment and I am sure Zachary is so very proud. Our Digital Animation program is very well respected and is quite an exciting program,” says Tobin.
“The talent, enthusiasm and hard work of students like Zachary combined with the expertise and commitment of instructors like Jim Grace, David Martingale and Darren Doucette allow our students and graduates to achieve such great success. Congratulations to Zachary and the Digital Animation instructors!”
