July 3, 2002 - Six programs at College of the North Atlantic’s Bay St. George campus (Stephenville Crossing location) recently received accreditation from the Institutional and Industrial Education Division of the Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education.

The programs were Hairstylist, Truck Transport Service Technician, Heavy Equipment Service Technician, Auto Service Technician, Heavy Equipment Operator, and Crane Operator.

This final phase of accreditation means that all of the college’s Industrial Trades programs have now been accredited.

“It was a lot of work, with six accreditation site visits in one year at the one campus site,” says Lorne King, Associate District Administrator of the Bay St. George campus.

“The faculty went beyond the call of duty to make sure the job was done and done right. And the support staff, Michelle Fry especially, worked very hard to help facilitate this process and keep it moving.”

Having programs accredited by the Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education is an important process for the college, and for its students.

“The accreditation that we do is an industry recognized accreditation,” says King.

“So when our students go out and say to prospective employers that they have gone through a program that has been accredited, the employer knows the student has met a specific standard. Without accreditation there’s no guarantee that the student has actually done the things they are purporting to have done.”

King says, in addition to the support staff and faculty at Stephenville Crossing, he would like to give thanks to George Anderson, Chair of the School of Industrial Trades for the college, and Linda Dwyer, Accreditation Clerk at the college’s Ridge Road campus, for their help in getting the accreditation documentation completed. He also thanks Carylon Bennett, Program Consultant from the Institutional and Industrial Education Division, for her assistance.
