College of the North Atlantic (CNA) alumni and staff will once again be contending for a number of awards, this time through the East Coast Music Association (ECMA) annual awards presentation, which will take place in St. John’s, April 9, 2015.

Music Industry and Performance, and Sound Recording & Production alumni have received a total of four nominations. The Secrets, composed of alumni Karla Pilgrim, Terri Lynn Eddy and Renee Batten, are up for Country Recording of the Year for their song Break Free; The Combine, which features CNA graduates Mike Mercer, Chris Reid, Taylor Roberts and Matt Ball, was nominated for Loud Recording of the Year for Witness; RocketRocketShip, with alumni Paul Brake, was nominated for Rising Star Recording of the Year for Shake It Off!; and Kilbride Music featuring alumna Michelle Robertson was nominated for Management/Manager of the Year.

Scott Hammond, a CNA Sound Recording & Production instructor, was nominated for Studio Engineer of the Year, and his company The Blue Room was nominated for Studio of the Year.

The East Coast Music Association is a regional collaboration of music industry professionals in Atlantic Canada. The primary activity of the association is the annual East Coast Music Week (ECMW), a five-day event that attracts industry professionals, talent buyers, media, and record labels from around the globe.

Each year ECMW offers a dynamic array of musical showcases, seminars and industry-centred gatherings. Music Week 2015 will also involve an Awards Gala, SOCAN Song Writers Circle, Musical Showcase, and the ECMA International Buyers Program.

Brenda Tobin, CNA’s Dean of Academics, Applied Arts & Tourism, says it is an exciting time for those in the music industry.

“I am so looking forward to the upcoming ECMW with the events being hosted in our province,” Tobin said, noting she was delighted to hear CNA alumni, as well as a faculty member, had been nominated for awards this year.

“These nominations speak for themselves of the outstanding talent, commitment, knowledge and skills of these individuals, and the high quality of the programs from which they come,” Tobin said. “I wish our alumni and Scott all the very best and congratulate them on the accomplishment of their nominations!”

East Coast Music Week East will be held in St. John’s from April 8 – 12. The Gala event will be held at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay on April 9. Additional information on the East Coast Music Awards can be found at www.ecma.com.
