The following loan periods are in place:
General Collection Items Two weeks
Reference Materials Non-Circulating
Back Issues of Magazines One Week
Audio-Visual Material (Videos, DVDs, etc.) Varies1
Reserves Varies2
Other Materials Non-Circulating3

1The circulation of A-V material is determined by each campus library.  Please contact your campus library for details.
2Items on Reserve can be borrowed for restricted loan periods.  Please check with your campus library to determine what is available and what the loan periods are.
3Non-circulating materials may circulate on request or by special arrangement.  Please consult with your campus library.

Library Services staff reserve the right to restrict borrowing privileges. Borrowers are responsible for knowing when items are due and returning them on time. Borrowers with overdue items will have their circulation privileges suspended. Persons who fail to return, renew, or pay for overdue items will be invoiced by the College for replacement costs, will not be issued marks, certificates, or diplomas, and will not be permitted to register for College courses until restitution is made.

Renewals
A borrower can renew the loan of general collection books or back issues of magazines, provided that no holds have been placed on these items. The lending library, however, reserves the right to restrict the number of renewals that will be permitted.

Holds
Holds can be placed on items that are checked out by other borrowers. Once a held item is returned, the person who placed the hold has three days to pick it up.

Intercampus Loans
Through our discovery service, Enterprise , searchers can discover what is available at any and all campus library learning commons collections. Requests for intercampus loans can be made at your campus library learning commons circulation desk. You can also email or telephone your campus library learning commons.

Interlibrary Loans
Requests to borrow items from libraries outside the College system can be made at your campus library learning commons circulation desk. You can also telephone or email your campus library learning commons.

According to College policy, there is no charge to students for ILLs intended to support CNA courses. As there may be charges to your campus library learning commons, sometimes considerable, to obtain ILLs, however, we reserve the right to restrict your access to this service. The interlibrary loan service should generally not be used to obtain required textbooks; and any costs associated with obtaining required texts through ILL will usually need to be paid by the borrower in advance.

As with our own library catalogue, which is searchable over Enterprise , the catalogues of many other libraries and library systems can be searched over the World Wide Web.  Some catalogues of note are: Please note the following:

Research Services
Library Services staff are available at all campuses to help students, faculty, and staff with their information/research needs.  Your campus library offers one-on-one consultation, library tours, and group instructional sessions on how to locate and evaluate information. Our “Find Books, Articles, and Other Resources” section, also provides information on how to find particular kinds of resources.  Please feel free to ask Library Services staff for help with your research.
Computing Services
Each campus library provides access to computers.  These computers are all networked either to a laser printer or a photocopier and can be used for library research or for other purposes.

CNA students doing work on their courses have first priority on these computers.  As a demonstration of respect and cooperation, therefore, students who want or need to use library computers for other than course work should, if possible, restrict their usage to periods of time when the demand is low, such as early in the morning, late in the afternoon, in the evening, or on the weekend.  In periods of high demand, furthermore, students who are using computers but are not involved in course work, may be requested to discontinue their usage until demand has lessened.  For information on the use of computing services by the general public, please refer to the Community User Services section below.

Anyone using library computers is expected to comply with the College of the North Atlantic “Acceptable Use Agreement” for technology resources.  A copy of this agreement is appended to the CNA policy entitled Electronic Information Systems – Use .

Circulation Services
Circulation Services are defined in CNA Library Services – Circulation: Procedure: SS-209-PR as:
Those services involved with: circulating materials held by a CNA library learning commons; placing holds on items that are checked out; and borrowing or lending items through intercampus or interlibrary loan.
If you wish to borrow circulating materials held by a campus library learning commons, you can visit that library learning commons and borrow the items directly. If it is not practical for you to visit in-person the campus library learning commons holding the materials you need, we will mail the desired materials directly to you. Items held by a library learning commons that are on Reserve are usually not available for mail out. If an item in a collection is only available for use in the library learning commons, such as a reference book, we will, according to what permissible under copyright law, photocopy or make a scanned copy of a specific article from that reference work and either mail or email that article to you.

You can find out what materials are available for delivery by searching the library catalogue with our Enterprise discovery service. Click on details to get the full record. To request a specific item, copy and paste the information you find in the catalogue into an email message addressed to the owning library learning commons (see email addresses under the campus names in the top menu of this page). You can also telephone the particular library learning commons or email Ask a Librarian form.

Books for mail out will be signed out to you for two weeks, with an additional two weeks provided for shipping time. Renewals are usually possible. The books will be mailed to you at no charge and we will include a postage paid label for you to return them to us. If you do not receive the package in a week, please let us know.

If you wish to borrow an item that is not available through one of our library learning commons, we may be able to get that item for you on interlibrary loan. Just email your library learning commons with information about the item that you are looking for and we will see if we can obtain that item for you. Procedures for obtaining interlibrary loans are explained in Procedure: SS-209-PR.

We do not charge fines for overdue materials. Borrowers who fail to return items to us, however, will be billed by the College for replacement costs and will have their borrowing privileges suspended until the bill is paid or the items are returned or replaced. Borrowers who have outstanding bills for non-returned library learning commons materials will be denied transcripts, certificates, and diplomas and will not be permitted to register for courses at any campus of College of the North Atlantic until restitution is made.

To return the materials, put them back in the same envelope in which you received them, seal the envelope securely, and attach to the envelope the postage paid shipping label provided. Take the envelope to a local post office or drop it in a Canada Post mail box.

Community User Services
All campus libraries of College of the North Atlantic are open to the public.  Community access is offered according to the following general guidelines:
  • Community users may borrow circulating materials. All libraries, however, have the right to restrict circulation to community users.  When materials are in high demand by our students or that demand is anticipated, our students take priority.  Also, if a community user has borrowed an item that is needed by one of our students, that item will be recalled.
  • Community users, including groups such as high school and private college classes, may request library tours.  It is preferable to schedule these activities for convenient times that do not interfere with our students.
  • Community users have access to our reference services during opening hours.  Our students’ requests take priority.
  • Community users also have access to our computing services, including accompanying printers; but the following restrictions should be noted.  Most libraries will restrict community access to computing services when our student demand is high, and some libraries may offer community access only at scheduled times.  Also, while community users are permitted to print documents, some libraries may place specific restrictions on this privilege.
  • Community users who make use of computing services must be aware of and follow the College of the North Atlantic “Acceptable Use Agreement” for technology resources.  A copy of this agreement is appended to the policy entitled Electronic Information Systems – Use .
