Salary Information

Salary will be determined in accordance with the Faculty Collective Agreement, based on the candidate's education and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Applied Research Chair will be responsible for providing the geological context to research teams concerning mineral deposits throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Working under the supervision of the Director of Industry Innovation (or designate), this position will be responsible for the design and on-going execution of applied R&D and innovation projects conducted by the College, including problem identification, the development of project plans and schedules, proposal writing, project initiation, project workflow, project monitoring and control, project closeout and the required liaison with relevant internal/external stakeholders. 
  • The incumbent will consult with research team members, industry and Indigenous partners, and government agencies to build partnerships to advance applied research projects in the province's extractive resources sector. 
  • Creating funding proposals to further the work of the Office of the Applied Research and Innovation.
  • The Applied Research Chair will lead strategic applied R&D projects, work closely with team members, industry and/or community partners to support both innovation and experiential learning opportunities for students stemming from applied R&D projects through mentorship and guidance. 
  • They will also promote public outreach and attract students to the extractive resources sector.

Screening Criteria

  • Doctoral degree in geological sciences (equivalencies may be considered).
  • Recent, relevant industry experience and/or recent, relevant experience in a research setting.
  • The candidate should be registered as a Professional Geoscientist with Professional Engineers and Geoscientists - Newfoundland and Labrador or eligible to be registered.

Assessment Criteria

  • Knowledge of the range of Newfoundland and Labrador mineral deposits and mineralogy and micro-analytical techniques, such as hyperspectral imaging, XRF, gamma ray spectroscopy and others. 
  • Knowledge of developing research funding proposals. 
  • Knowledge of LiDAR and remote sensing applications for the mining industry (asset). 
  • Knowledge of the unique role Canadian colleges play in support of Canada's innovation ecosystem (asset).
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Organizational and time management skills with the ability to plan, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Project management skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with other faculty and staff.

Conditions of Offer

    • Credentials obtained outside of Canada will require an evaluation to determine their Canadian educational equivalency. This evaluation must support the educational requirements for the position.

  • Willing to accept overnight travel (occasional) within Canada and potentially, internationally.
