Salary Information
Within the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's Solicitor Pay Plan ($82,061.00 - $89,519.00 per annum).
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to and working closely with the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, the Associate General Counsel provides legal services that support the College of the North Atlantic's strategic goals and daily operations. Working both independently and within a small, collaborative legal team, the incumbent delivers timely, practical legal advice and representation across a wide range of organizational matters. Areas of focus include (but are not limited to):
- Contracts and Procurement
- Employment and Labour Relations
- Human Rights
- Administrative law (including student-related matters)
- Privacy and Access to Information
- Intellectual Property, and
- Risk Management
Key responsibilities include:
- Conduct legal research and provide issue analyses in writing and verbally.
- Draft and review contracts, agreements, policies, and other legal instruments.
- Prepare documents and represent the College at administrative tribunals and civil litigation.
- Identify and evaluate legal risks to guide decision-making and risk management.
- Provide legal advice on policy development, personnel issues, operational concerns, and information disclosure.
- Develop and maintain productive relations with College leadership across campuses and departments.
- Monitor, interpret, and communicate legislative and case-law updates to stakeholders.
- Prepare legal reports for the Executive team, Board of Governors, auditors, and other stakeholders as needed.
- Support internal reviews and investigations.
- Perform other related legal tasks as required.

Conditions of Offer

- Verification of credentials and applicable licenses, certifications, and/or professional memberships as required for the position.
- Membership in good standing, or eligibility for membership, with the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Conditions of Acceptance
- Acknowledges the requirement for travel throughout the province and occasional travel within Canada. Candidates must either hold a valid driver's license or have access to reliable transportation.
- Occasional flexible scheduling may be required to address urgent matters. These instances are rare, but availability outside standard hours may be needed on short notice.
