Salary Information

Hourly rate for an Apprentice will be calculated as a percentage of the Journeyperson rate based on their year of apprenticeship.

CG-29: $27.61/hour effective April 1, 2025:

1st Year: 60% ($16.57/hour)

2nd Year: 70% ($19.33/hour)

3rd Year: 80% ($22.09/hour)

4th Year: 90% ($24.85/hour)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work under the guidance of a Journeyperson in a garage environment and at a field site as required, to learn how to diagnose, repair, and maintain machinery such as tandem dump trucks, mobile cranes, boom trucks, loaders, backhoes, and excavators as well as a mixture of CNA light vehicles.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues and perform necessary repairs.
  • Conduct routine service tasks, including oil changes, filter replacements and lubrication.
  • Assist in documenting work performed, parts used, and time spent on each repair.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety protocols.
  • Attend training sessions and complete required coursework as part of the apprenticeship program.
  • Other related duties as required.

Screening Criteria

  • Must be a registered apprentice with the Truck Transport Mechanic Program.
  • Training, experience and licensing endorsements in Heavy Equipment Operation (asset).

Assessment Criteria

  • Knowledge of a variety of seasonal ground equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanic principles/procedures.
  • Knowledge of industry-related safety practices.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism.

  • Communication skills.

Conditions of Offer

  • When requested by the Employer, a recent and satisfactory Certificate of Conduct must be provided.
  • Candidates must submit, with their resume, confirmation of completion of Heavy Equipment Technician or Truck Transport Block Level Training at a recognized post-secondary institution (transcript), and confirmation of apprentice log book, which will confirm their apprenticeship status.
  • Candidates must provide a Class 5 driver’s license.

Conditions of Acceptance

  • Willingness to accept a physically demanding position.
  • Acknowledges the requirement to climb onto or under large machinery, frequently working in tight spaces, and long hours on feet, standing, crouching, or kneeling for extended periods.
  • Acknowledges the requirement to lift and carry heavy tools, equipment and parts, often 50 pounds or more.
