Salary Information

Salary will be determined in accordance with the Faculty Collective Agreement, based on the candidate's education and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

The role of the Instructional Assistant will be to:

  • Provide support to students and faculty within the Commercial Cook program at College of the North Atlantic’s Happy Valley-Goose Bay campus.
  • Provide assistance to faculty in the planning, preparation, and delivery of instruction to students.
  • Demonstrate specific skills, tasks, experiments, and/or work practices in a classroom and/or laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrate proper procedures, methods, and skills.
  • Work closely with students to model appropriate behaviours.
  • Assist faculty with safe work practices and personal protection, menu planning, maintenance of sanitary standards, production procedures, preparation and presentation of a variety of food for a variety of client groups.
  • Maintain and requisition materials and supplies.
  • Set a professional example and communicating effectively at a level appropriate to the ability of students and providing an emotionally safe learning environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Other related duties consistent with providing and maintaining quality student-centered instruction will be required.

Screening Criteria

  • Candidates must have an Interprovincial Journeyperson Certification in Cook.
  • 6 years combined apprenticeship and recent related trade specific industry experience.

Assessment Criteria

  • Knowledgeable in the subject area of the Cook trade in a commercial setting.
  • Understanding of classroom management and instructional techniques currently being utilized in a teaching and learning environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Organizational and time management skills with the ability to plan, prioritize, and efficiently meet deadlines.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills with an ability to consider and respond appropriately to the needs of students.
  • Proficiency and/or a willingness to embrace teaching and learning technologies to support the student learning experience.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with other faculty and staff while taking direction well.
  • Commitment to teaching excellence and to supporting and delivering a positive student learning experience.

    • Credentials obtained outside of Canada will require an evaluation to determine their Canadian educational equivalency. This evaluation must support the educational requirements for the position.
