Supporting the Innovation Ecosystem

Through the Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator (MICA), and the Technology Access Centre (TAC) networks, the Office of Applied Research and Innovation has access to innovation supports in all sector areas through local, national and international relationships. We are always happy to act as a connector / conduit between our partners and bringing together the right people to ensure project success.

Mining Industry Operations and Processes

The OARI team consists of several researchers who have expertise in all areas of the mining sector from exploration, discovery, development, to production, and reclamation. With stationary, handheld, and aerial Hyperspectral Imaging, as well as stationary and portable Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), OARI is well equipped to support geochemical and geophysical analysis.

Reality Capture and Digitization

Reality capture is a method of collecting real world geospatial data in a time and cost-effective manner. OARI uses our suite of handheld and terrestrial LiDAR, aerial photogrammetry, bathymetric LiDar, and Hyperspectral equipment to create 3D point clouds of both indoor and outdoor environments to make realistic models that have several applications. Our Technology Access Centre Team works closely with our industry and community partners to determine how this technology can be used to meet their needs.

Product Prototyping and Development

Our suite of advanced manufacturing technology such as 3D printers, laser cutting, CNC milling, and high-resolution 3D scanning is used by our team who apply their expertise in modelling and design to help you achieve high quality and cost-effective prototypes. There is no limit to how detailed your idea may be, the team in our Innovative Product Development Lab will work with you to bring your idea to life, while considering future manufacturability, repeatability, production scale, and cost.

Technology Adoption for Business Optimization

The acceptance and integration of new technologies into already-existing systems or the development of brand-new ones often requires a significant investment of time, capital, and human resources for businesses of all sizes. Our methodical approach to understanding current state systems, working with our partners to help realize their vision, researching, testing, and even developing new solutions can significantly aid with de-risking investments in new technology. Our team of researchers and students will help you gather and compile the critical information needed to make an informed decision for your business.
