Sally Stratton, a first-year Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Technician student at Gander campus, has been selected as the Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. Entrance Bursary recipient for 2012. Gander Campus Administrator, Fergus O’Brien presented Sally with the bursary last week.

Sally Stratton, of Ladle Cove on the Bonavista Peninsula, has been selected as the recipient of the Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. Entrance Bursary at College of the North Atlantic. Sally is a first-year Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Technician student at Gander campus.

The Fairfax Entrance Bursary is valued at $3,500 and is available to learners who graduated from high school no more than 18 months before entering their first year of study at the college.

The award is renewable for the length of the recipient’s program, so students who are fortunate enough to win can save from borrowing over $10,000 in student loans if they are in a three-year program.

“We are very fortunate to have this award for our first year students entering the college,” says Sandra Lewis, chairperson of the Provincial Awards Committee. “It helps cover the cost of tuition and fees for the year, as well as contributes to their book and housing costs. For some students it may have meant that they were able to stay at the college to continue their studies.”

She says that because it is a renewable award, students tend to be motivated to work hard to maintain their average so they can be funded again for the next academic year.

“It is a positive situation for the student for sure – to keep up with their studies and help pay toward their education.”
