Bradley Whalen, one of 23 College of the North Atlantic students heading to Toronto today to compete in the Skills Canada National Competition running from June 4-7, will be representing Ridge Road campus in the Refrigeration competition.

Today, 23 College of the North Atlantic (CNA) students, as part of Team Newfoundland and Labrador, travelled to the 20th annual Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) being held June 4-7 in Toronto.

Forty-eight competitors from the province, along with technical experts, volunteers and staff make up Team Newfoundland and Labrador 2014. Post-secondary students and apprentices in skilled trades and technologies will vie for gold, silver and bronze medals in fields such as baking, electronics, sheet metal, and welding.

SCNC is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. Every year, more than 550 young people from all regions of Canada attend SCNC to participate in over 40 skilled trade and technology contests. Skills Canada expects 15,000 people to visit the over 500,000 square feet of event space at SCNC 2014.

“Skilled trades and technologies play a significant part in our daily lives, and more importantly in our provincial, regional and national economies,” said CNA President and CEO, Ann Marie Vaughan. “We are living through interesting times from a labour market perspective – skilled trades people, technicians and technologists are, and will continue to be, in greater demand than ever before. The college is proud of the partnership it has fostered with Skills Canada and we look forward to educating a strong and capable skilled trades workforce for years to come.”

The 23 students from CNA are representing 10 campuses, including Bonavista, Burin, Clarenville, Corner Brook, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Placentia, Port aux Basques, Prince Philip Drive, Ridge Road and Seal Cove.

Robin Walters, CNA’s Dean of Industrial Trades, is looking forward to once again seeing CNA students and graduates compete on the national stage.

“The professional attitude and knowledge they demonstrate speaks volumes for the promising future of this province. We are fortunate to witness their talents,” Walters said. “To the students competing, good luck! We are confident you will represent your campuses, your college and this province to the best of your ability.”
