Martin Coady, president of the CSE, poses with Nanuk, the new college mascot.

St. John’s, January 20, 2001 – The Council of Student Executives for College of the North Atlantic unveiled Nanuk, the college mascot on Saturday, January 20, during their annual meeting at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s.

In making the announcement, Martin Coady, CSE President, said the seven-foot tall polar bear will appear at various special events held by the college. The image will also be used on college memorabilia.

"We now have one official mascot for all campuses of College of the North Atlantic,” said Mr. Coady.

“For the CSE, this mascot represents the excellent quality of student life at the college and the strong sense of school spirit the students experience here."

The image of the polar bear and the name were both selected after the CSE held a contest amongst its student body last year to come up with a college mascot. The polar bear symbolizes the strength of a college education and reflects the northern location of Newfoundland and Labrador. Nanuk is the Inuit word for polar bear.

Also during the meeting, the CSE announced it had selected the Children’s Wish Foundation as the charity they would be supporting this year.

“Given the nature of their activities and the excellent work they do for children, we thought this would be a good charity to make a donation to on behalf of the CSE and the Student Activities Councils,” says Mr. Coady.
