Students enrolled in the welder program at Corner Brook campus held a fundraiser for the Philippine relief fund as their fellow class mate, John Reyan Sanchez, is from that country.

The students built an outdoor fire pit and with the help of the student council held a raffle. They raised $465 which will be donated to the local Red Cross.

Welder instructor Brad Jenniex says the students sold tickets on the fire pit over a two-week period.

“When the disaster happened we asked John about it, so I came up with the idea to raise some funds since we have someone whose birth country is affected by this disaster.”

He says there was an excellent response with people buying tickets from across the province. A graduate of Corner Brook’s construction/industrial electrician program took home the prize.

John says that while his family and friends were located in other areas of the country and were safe from the disaster, it’s great to see Canadians helping those affected by the typhoon.

“I’m feeling very grateful the school gave a fundraiser for the Philippines. Many people in Canada have made donations to help,” John said. “I’m surprised and thankful for the response worldwide.”
