An honourable mention went to Dr. Wayne Eastman of Corner Brook for his photo Clothing Factory from Dhaka, Bangladesh.

First place winner of the Through Global Lens photo contest for International Education Week was Melissa Bennett of Bay St. George campus, who submitted an image of two puffins set in Elliston, NL.

In celebration of the 2013 International Education Week (Nov. 18-22), College of the North Atlantic's (CNA) International Services Office organized the fifth annual Through Global Lens photo contest.

Faculty, staff and students at all CNA campuses in Newfoundland and Labrador were encouraged to submit photos from their international or local travels. There were 40 contestants and 74 photo submissions. Each contestant could submit up to two photos which reflected a local or foreign culture and scenery.

Over 3,000 votes were cast, with Melissa Bennett of Bay St. George campus being selected as the winner for her photo titled Kissing Puffins set in Elliston, NL. An honourable mention went to Dr. Wayne Eastman of Corner Brook for his photo Clothing Factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The contest was designed to raise awareness of international education and exchange, and to raise cultural awareness and understanding at CNA. Sonia Ho, international student coordinator at CNA, says the contest is a very popular event during International Education Week.

“As with previous years, CNA celebrated International Education Week along with many other post-secondary institutions within Canada,” Ho said. “One way of getting all students, staff and faculty at 17 campuses spread out in Newfoundland and Labrador involved is through our Global Lens Photo Contest.”

“Aside from being a great way to celebrate the artistic talents in our college community, through this contest and other events that take place at the college this week, we hope to raise inter-cultural awareness within the college and to stress the importance and contribution international education has made in today’s world.”
