Richard Spencer

Faculty Researcher (AI & ML)
College of the North Atlantic's Prince Philip Drive Campus

Richard Spencer is a Faculty Researcher with the Department of Applied Research and Innovation at the College of the North Atlantic. His current research explores the use of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science techniques to analyze hyperspectral imagery—advancing mineral exploration through feature engineering, band ratios, principal component analysis (PCA), clustering, and supervised learning models.

In addition to his research work, Richard supports the development and delivery of CNA’s Applied Degree in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. He has over a decade of experience in post-secondary education, designing and teaching curriculum in areas such as Python programming, data science, software development, and cloud computing.

Richard has also led provincial education initiatives, including the Technology Career Pathway (TCP) program, where he supported instructors and high school students in emerging technologies. He has collaborated closely with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Department of Education to align educational programming with industry needs.

Beyond the classroom and lab, Richard serves as a Cloud Computing Expert with Skills Canada and WorldSkills International, having coached Team Canada competitors at global events in Russia, Korea, and France. His work combines research, innovation, and education with a focus on preparing students and industry partners for the future of AI and cloud technologies.
